Abstract
In an automotive industry, the power train means the engine and transmission. When an automotive manufacturer develop a full designed car, it is necessary to develop the engine and transmission which shall be mounted on the car. Therefore most of automobile manufacturer builds its own factory for producing the power train. The major components of a transmission are gear, shaft, sleeve, clutch housing and transmission case. Each part is machined in a sub-line and the machined parts are assembled in an assembly line.
Flow line is the typical concept of layout for machining these parts. In order to design the transmission manufacturing line, several factors should be considered such as yearly production target, working hours, machines, tools, material handling equipments and so on. If the designers of manufacturing line were unaware of some factors those would be influenced on the system performance, it will cause greater problems in the phase of mass production. Therefore the initial design of transmission line including transmission case should be evaluated carefully.
Simulation is the most powerful tool for the planning, design and control of the system considered. Simulation is defined as the process of designing a model of a real system and conducting experiments with this model for the purpose of understanding the behavior of the system and/or evaluating various strategies for the operation of the system. However, in the real industries, it is easy to see that the errors of the production line are found at the mass-production stage, and that much cost and time are required to solve the problem. Therefore, the implementation stage of the simulation becomes earlier and earlier than before.
 In this thesis, the case study of simulation dealing with the transmission case line in a Korean automotive factory is introduced. The process model of the transmission case line was defined and the 3D simulation model is developed using QUEST®. In the as-is analysis phase, it was found that the initial concept of the layout could not satisfy the target of the production rate. To achieve the target production rate, some alternatives were suggested in the what-if analysis phase, those were related in the reduction of the cycle time and the reduction of repair time of the major break.
